First Friday and Second Saturday! A weekend of ful First Friday and Second Saturday! A weekend of full evening activivites and lots of creatives to celebrate! Join Noir Collective and our neighbors on The Block for our 2nd Annual Black Storyteller's event. You can choose your experience between timed experiences and ongoing events. "Boosting the Block" highlights at Penny Cup. We'll end the meeting at YMI for a performance by Black Enterprise Performance Troupe led by Penny Meacham. Then... Saturday night, we'll be at The Refinery to celebrate Show and Tale Creative and The Asheville Artist Coalition. Free movie (reserve your seat) and Gallery stroll. It's going to be an memorable weekend.

Also, from 5 - 7, meet the facilitators from Durham, Margaret & Brittany, for th Boosting the Block project @ Penny Cup There are several timed activities happening throughout businesses on The Block. We are co-creating a space for wellness warriors, We are co-creating a space for wellness warriors, creative activists, and social justice visionaries, cultural keepers and peace makers, anyone that gives and gives to community, to their jobs/career, and to home life. We are co-creating a space for YOU. Wellness comes in many forms: pilates, massage, writing, aromatherapy, yoga, drawing, herbal remedies, talking, laughing, humming, meditation, silence... in order for us to be well and stay well in this demanding world, we must check in regularly, look out for one another, and share and partake in each other's gifts. The loss of our good friend, Dionne, is a wake up call for our community. "No more Black women will die overworked, overlooked, and under-appreciated in "service" to others." Soul Sistahs Healing and Wellness circles for Womxn of the Diaspora will gather Monday evenings from 6 - 7:30 pm. Hosted by Noir Collective, Westside Acupuncture & Pilates, Just Blk, and Light & Quirk. YMI Cultural Center.

It's perfect for today, Kujichagulia or Self - Determination.  Ajax often shares that their life is a series of experiences and that who they are is not defined by what they are going through or the circumstances around them. Defining and redefining ourselves is part of the ever evolving experiences of getting to know ourselves. It is the process of how we liberate our minds, our hearts, and our spirits to become our authentic selves.  How YOU define YOU may be the only definition that matters.  How are you celebrating Kwanzaa this year? What a sweet and unexpected First Friday evening. What a sweet and unexpected First Friday evening. As Ramin chided, “Aren’t you glad to have been invited!” Yes, i am! We appreciate the phone calls and texts of encouragement for an impromptu First Friday! What we know is that we’ve worked so hard to build this and tonight was a beautiful reminder of what Noir means to so many folks. We’re not sure where we go from here – what we do know is that we are not alone! Special thanks to musical guest appearance from our neighbor and friend, Adama! Also to Dr. Tamarie of real eyes consulting, Aflorar Herb Collective, and Daniele Martin for special self-care gifts to all attendees. (Please be in touch so that you can get yours!) Noir Collective AVL is an active partner in Bridging The Gaps WNC, an initiative of YMI Cultural Center, which like many other agencies is organizing community relief work. We are also positioned to support the organizers, volunteers, and all other community members participating in this work by creating and holding a creative and regenerative space for processing and healing. We have transformed our art gallery and gift shop into a community space for creativity and connection. You are invited to join us to create something as a way of processing or to make cards of “well wishes” for others. We’re getting ready for First Friday on The Bloc We’re getting ready for First Friday on The Block & BoomTown FestAVL. We’ve been digging up treasures from YMI archives and found an exhibit from 2008, “That’s Me!” which features Andrea Clark and works by a few other artists. The partial reshowing of “That’s Me!” is a depiction of Black Asheville before Urban Renewal, a federal program that was designed to beautify America by clearing American cities of unsightly living conditions and” blight”. The federal plan was implemented in Asheville by bulldozing and leveling thousands of Black neighborhoods. New highways, interstate and traffic patterns cut through the heart of many Black Asheville communities and new buildings were erected that restricted the movement, commerce and travel. While we are discussing reparations in Asheville, this exhibit along with several others (#GrindAVL, #RSAA, and #TheAshevilleMuseumOfHistory), is one more call to take note of the devastation and loss that is part of what Asheville is today, to get involved in bringing understanding and awareness, and to advocate for compensation for many Asheville families that lost so much.
